For most parents, potty training boy comes as a confusing phenomenon. After all, which way should you teach him first – standing or sitting? Understand that first of all, you need to recognize if your child is ready to start potty training. A few pointers that might help you keep a check on the right time for starting with the potty are mentioned below:

- Is your boy aware of his bowel movements?
- Is he able to control the bowel and bladder muscles?
- Does he inform you of the times he has to use the toilet?
- Is there a gap of two hours minimum between the urine passing for him?

If the above questions have a positive answer, your child may be ready for toilet training. Now before you begin with potty training boy, know that boys take longer than girls to learn potty habits. Therefore, do not compare with kids his age and have patience. You have to be there as a constant support for the child and not as a judge.

Now begin by going shopping for a brand new potty for him. Take your boy along so that the potty is of his choice and liking and he is able to associate himself with it. Buy training pants and underwear with his favorite cartoon characters on them. You can also buy illustrated books and videos demonstrating potty moves to the child.

Potty Training For Boys Isn’t Easy…

So how do you go about with the training? While many parents choose to teach the boy both the techniques of sitting and standing simultaneously, it is generally seen that this hampers the understanding of the child. He gets confused about both the ways and messes up altogether. Therefore, the ideal thing is to teach the potty training boy pooping and peeing while sitting. The reason is that this will establish the fact with him that everything – pee or poop – goes into the toilet. Once the child is able to poop and urinate easily in the sitting position, then move on to the task of teaching him the difference. The second step now will be to ask the father, uncle or any other male relative to take the boy along for urinating. When the boy watches his father (preferably) peeing while standing, he too will be interested in following suit. Amongst all this, do not forget to teach him to always lift the toilet seat before peeing.

There will be several mis-hits and accidents. Be prepared to clean up the mess. Never scold the child for an accident. Always be sympathetic and tell him he will do better next time. Encourage him, reward him and praise him for every one successful attempt. However, make sure you do not over do the same. It is also helpful to try using the urine guard on his potty chair. This will prevent the urine from falling on all sides. However, make sure that the child does not hurt his penis from the urine guard.

While the process will take time, potty training boys will learn potty habits soon enough and relieve you from the pain and stress of cleaning up after accidents and changing diapers.
